Welcome
"Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”
― Abraham Lincoln
Teaching, as with so many things in life, requires a lot of advanced preparation. Putting together this website, the focus of which is a First Grade Unit on Number Sense and Counting, has been a helpful reminder of this for me.
This site provides a compilation of information and activities, all based on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs), namely, 1.1 and 1.2, which are listed in their entirety in the Standards of Learning section.
In the Activities section, you will find links to each station, which have instructions for setting up the activities, a list of materials needed, links to or copies of recording sheets, formative assessment ideas, differentiation ideas, and more. The Classroom Ideas section provides resources to help supplement this unit, with links to word walls and counting card vocabulary.
Lastly, I have added a separate section for Assessments, which include other ideas for summative assessments (again, formative assessments are listed with each of the individual activity descriptions), which will reveal whether the students have mastered the basic ideas and skills.
